Eagle DJ is selected as Billboard club reporter

Columbus Eagle Bar DJ Patrick Finn was recently selected by Billboard, the newsweekly of music, video and home entertainment, to be its newest club reporter. He joins Billboard reporter Michael Swaggerty

Becoming a reporter is difficult, and comes only after the magazine deems a city's radio market influential enough to add a reporter. Finn, who spins three nights a week at the predominantly gay male Eagle, doesn't think

his sexual orientation had anything to do with his selection, and said that the music industry is very aware and accepting of the gay influence in the dance music world.

That acceptance shows in the choice of San Francisco as the host city in the last two years for the International Dance Music Summit-a meeting of DJs, writers, producers and other music industry professionals from around the world. Finn submitted a playlist and promotional package to the Billboard people at the last Summit in February, which led to his recent hiring.

"When industry people think of dance music," Finn said, "they automatically think 'gay.' I would say that the dance music industry is predominantly gay.”

Finn said that his selection by Billboard says a lot about the Columbus music scene, and he plans to use his new position to help his hometown get the recognition he feels it deserves.

"There is only one dance radio mix-show in Columbus: Swaggerty's All Mixed Up on WCBE-FM Saturday nights," Finn said. "Columbus is definitely starving for another weekend mix-show. Over the years, as dance mix-shows have come and gone on Columbus radio, they consistently rate near the top of the ratings for their time slots. There is an audience in central Ohio begging for another dance radio mix-show. Until then, I'm going to use my new position to brighten Columbus' mark on our nation's dance music map."
